Modern Addition Brings Vastu Shastra to Master Suite Retreat

Inspired by Vastu Shastra principles, this second floor remodel made the most of geometric patterns, symmetry, and directional alignments to reconfigure this master suite, bringing harmony and positive energy to the home. A modern addition provided much needed headspace to make the most of available square footage, while maintaining the charm of the home. Swapping the closet and bedroom spaces provided better alignment, and a nearby workstation is situated in front of a large window to bring the feeling of nature in.

Part of a whole home master plan, this was the second phase after transforming the basement into a luxurious guest space. The age and style of this home meant the second floor was small with sloped ceilings that limited headroom. The reconfigured layout was about the organization of space and form. But before design could start, construction was extensive and we managed every detail. With the roof off for several months during the winter to accommodate building the modern addition, this remodel required a strong focus on project management to keep each piece on track and moving forward. And because the family continued to live in the home, there were additional considerations to manage dust and noise as much as possible.

The modern addition was an essential element, addressing their request for a master retreat to add function and style to better meet the needs of everyday life. This addition was intentionally planned to not impact the roofline and therefore, maintain the traditional facade of the home.

New Floor Plan

Ultimately, we made use of space wherever it was available to make the most of this additional space and reconfigured floor plan. Niches maximize what was previously considered wasted space, providing added function and enhancing the aesthetic of the room. Design details capture the clients’ vibe, transforming this level into the master suite of their dreams.

A MASTER RETREAT

The focus of this project was on making the most of the second floor. The client wanted a closet that felt more like visiting her favorite boutique and the nearby master bedroom to fit the same vibe. The first step was swapping these spaces, which provided better overall alignment and direction for the client within their home. The closet took the place of the bedroom and the former closet became the master bedroom space. This simple reconfiguration embraced Vastu Shastra for a better flow and made the most of the new addition.

The master bedroom is a cozy space, capturing the character of the previous roofline with a rustic beam detail. A built in dog bed takes advantage of unused attic space and a new niche became the perfect spot to house the current reading list. Because of the age of the home, the design was about embracing the cottage feel of the home. This was done with modern windows that let in abundant natural light for their size and location. Supply chain issues significantly delayed the project when the windows took far longer than expected or planned, but they were absolutely worth the wait. They fit the aesthetic of the home, maximize natural light, and complement the eclectic vibe within the master suite.

The space was further personalized with bold wallpaper that features an antique vibe. The chandelier was curated for the space to add interest and uniqueness to the room. Instead of a door, the opening to the closet gives a spatial feel to the suite and maximizes function and flow.

LIKE SHOPPING IN YOUR OWN CLOSET

The closet was a huge priority for this client, both in terms of how she wanted it to look and feel. The end result is reminiscent of an experience. Clothing is on display instead of simply stored away for later use. A large custom island provides necessary storage and is designed to resemble an impressive piece of furniture. Paired with the custom concrete top, the piece defines the space while also providing functional storage and an easy spot for ironing the next day’s clothes.

But this wasn’t the first design. After signing off on the plans and placing the orders, our client realized the space was more modern than she wanted. Ultimately, this closet is a space she will live with for a long time to come and we wanted her to be happy. So we adapted. We reworked our plans, adjusted our orders, and found a design that was everything she wanted and more. This is that space!

Around the perimeter of the room, you’ll find hanging storage that feels more like a high end boutique than your typical closet jam-packed with the season’s attire. Crafted and curated for an elevated aesthetic, the clothing bars and hooks feature a more vintage look that complements the intimate vibe for a space that maximizes function while also feeling like an experience in the comfort of your own home.

A LANDING LOADED WITH FUNCTION & DETAIL

The landing now features a more accessible workstation courtesy of the modern addition. Taking advantage of headroom that was previously lost due to sloped ceilings, this cozy office nook boasts loads of natural light with nearby storage that keeps everything close at hand. Large doors to the right provide access to upper level laundry, making this task far more convenient for this active family.

The landing also features a bold wallpaper the client fell in love with. Two separate doors - one leading directly to the master bedroom and the other to the closet - balance the quirky pattern. Atop the stairs, the same wallpaper was used to wrap an access door creating the illusion of a piece of artwork. One would never notice the knob in the lower right corner which is used to easily open the door. This space was truly designed with every detail in mind to make the most of a small space.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

No matter the project, we first consider what is already there and how we can work with what we have, especially when it comes to plumbing in an older home. Not only is this more budget friendly, but it’s strategic too. It means the budget can focus on new and functional features.
